Recreation is Health Care. However, the current health care system exists in a vortex driven by acute care needs. To move towards a whole system of health that enables prevention, the recreation sector needs to learn the language of the current system.
Join Katie Fenn, BCRPA CEO, as she helps you learn the language of health care and navigate the communication pathways between health and recreation.
The toxic drug poisoning crisis has blindsided communities, large and small, across the country. Walk With Me utilizes arts-based community action research to make change. To develop a Story Walk, the WWM team listens to People With Lived and Living Experience of the crisis who share their truths with the assurance that their stories will be shared with the public and to those with the power to make change.
Join Dr. Sharon Karsten and other members of the Walk With Me team for a Story Walk and learn how this program is working to make change.
Leisure Education is a systematic process of helping participants better understand where, why, how, and with whom they can pursue leisure and achieve its benefits. Moving beyond physical education's preoccupation with physical activity, often defined as sports, leisure education empowers individuals and groups to increase their leisure awareness, negotiate constraints, and broaden their leisure repertoire.
Join Janay Babuin-Funk, Certified Recreation Therapy Specialist, and Dr. Aggie Weighill for a workshop focused on how you can bring leisure education into your community programming.
The Recreation Prescription Project is a partnership between the City of Nanaimo Parks, Recreation and Culture, Vancouver Island University (VIU), and Nanaimo – Ladysmith Public Schools to promote youth health and well-being. The project is grounded in a Social Prescribing Framework, the five goals from the National Framework for Recreation, and the BC Ministry of Education grade 5/6 curriculum and competencies.
Project leaders Darcie Osborne, Joanne Schroeder, and Dr. Amanda Johnson will share more about this innovative project and help you explore ways to harness the power of Recreation Prescription in your community or organization.
