The Congress will be hosted at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre (VICC) located downtown Nanaimo, in the heart of the unceded ancestral territory of the Snuneymuxw First Nation. CCLR will take place May 19 - 22, 2026.
As the 2026 hosts, the World Leisure Centre of Excellence and Department of Recreation, Tourism and Hospitality Management at Vancouver Island University look forward to welcoming you to Nanaimo, British Columbia.
The 2026 Canadian Congress on Leisure Research embraces the transformative power of leisure under the compelling theme Leisure is Transformation: Are you REDI? Situated on the ancestral unceded territory of the Snuneymuxw First Nation in the picturesque city of Nanaimo, British Columbia, this congress will delve into the profound impact that leisure can have on addressing critical societal issues.
Building on the legacies of previous congresses, this event will challenge scholars to explore how leisure research can contribute to Reconciliation, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (REDI). As we navigate the complexities of a rapidly changing post-secondary landscape, unstable geo politics, increasing social inequities, climate change, public health crises, and ecological disasters, this congress serves as a vital platform for highlighting innovative approaches and solutions that harness the transformative power of leisure. The Congress also provides an essential gathering space for academic and pracademics looking to develop scholarly networks and collaborations.
Hosted by the World Leisure Centre of Excellence at Vancouver Island University, the Congress invites participants to engage with a diverse network of scholars and practitioners from around the globe. This event promises to foster meaningful dialogues and partnerships that harness the power of leisure to drive positive change. With its rich cultural backdrop and stunning natural landscapes, Nanaimo offers an inspiring setting for attendees to connect, learn, and envision a more just and equitable future.
Join us in exploring how leisure can be a catalyst for transformation and a key player in solving the world's most pressing challenges.

Story Walks are guided experiential journeys foregrounding the voices of People With Lived and Living Experience.
CCLR delegates can participate in a Story Walk on Tues May 19 from 1pm - 4pm.
There is no cost, and advance registration is required. A minimum of 12 to a maximum of 25 people can participate.
Individuals gather together in a space hosted by the Walk With Me team where they are invited to sit in circle. We introduce ourselves and our work and speak to the weight of the crisis and the gravity of the stories. Following this introduction, we invite participants to don wireless headsets and walk together on a guided audio journey while listening to the voices of People With Lived and Living Experience and their allies (static listening options are available). We walk together over and under bridges, through parks, in residential and industrial areas while allowing the stories to ‘wash over us’. The act of walking, we have found, enables various layers of processing to occur. Following the walk, participants gather together again in-circle, and are offered food (usually chili or soup). Together we process the insights shared during the walk, and co-create new ways forward.
